The 98.6° KIT...The inexpensive, compact, easily carried emergency survival kit designed to provide shelter, fire, signaling, basic tools and water sanitization & storage.


The 98.6 Kit covers five critical equipment categories for a survivor in an emergency.  The first three: Shelter; Fire; and Signaling represent the most important elements of any survival kit.  The next two: Water Disinfection and Storage; and Tools supplement and facilitate the use of the other items in the Kit.  The entire package is a mere 5.5 inches long by 5 inches wide by 1 inch thick and weighs a little over 9 ounces.

In the Shelter category the Kit contains a 78 gallon, an extra strong 2 mil plastic bag, 35 feet of 200 lb test line, and 8 feet of duct tape.  The bag serves as a full body, windproof and waterproof, immediate action shelter.  In addition, a survivor may split the bag open to create a 74 inch by 76 inch plastic tarp to aid in sheltering others.  Survivors may use the line to affix the bag or tarp to the surrounding environment and the duct tape serves to repair holes in the bag or to join multiple bags for larger shelter options.

The Kit’s Fire category contains a “metal match” style fire starter along with 3 cotton and petroleum jelly tinders.  Each of the tinders will burn for 5 to 8 minutes and each also comes with a foil base to contain melting petroleum and extend burn time.  In addition, the white plastic card used to hold the line and duct tape may be used as an additional extremely flammable and long burning fuel source in difficult conditions.

In the Signaling arena the 98.6 Kit provides a military style signal mirror, a bright LED light source, and a high pitched rescue whistle.  In addition the Kit’s shelter bag provides material for a host of passive signaling options through its extremely bright and highly visible blue color.  The fire making capability presents yet another signaling option.

The 98.6 Kit outer storage bag provides a compact water storage container for use with the Kit’s two chlorine dioxide disinfection tablets.  Each tablet will disinfect 1 liter of fresh water.

98.6° Pocket Survival Kit...

This streamlined, but complete Survival Kit is designed to be carried in a suit, shirt or other limited spaces. It is inexpensive, compact, emergency survival kit designed to provide shelter, fire, signaling, basic tools and water sanitization & storage. Ideal for those more formally dressed, but required to be outside, sometimes in remote sites.

ERI Silicon Impregnated Nylon Tarp (8'X10')...light, strong and the best for shelter construction.

Immediate action shelter to protect your body core temperature. One heavy duty 2 mil plastic shelter bag, 38” X 74” (78 gallons). One cutting tool and instructions on multiple uses of the bag. In addition to solid protection from inclement weather, the black color is especially valuable for shade shelter in the hot deserts. The dark color also helps someone blend with the environment when necessary.

Para-cord (Parachute Cord/550 Cord) 50'...often called suspension line as well. White, strong outer sheath with 7 strands of "inner" core with a strength of 35# each. One of the most versatile lines ever designed.

Don't confuse this 550 Parachute Cord with the numerous copies on the market today. This is the official product used by the U.S. Military. It's military designation is MIL-C-5040 Type III and has a rated strength of 550 lbs. Our version, the authentic version, comes in white. The sturdy flexible “rope” is actually used in the construction of parachutes. Real “550 cord” has an outer cover containing 7 nylon cords which, when removed, can be used for sewing or any other purpose that requires strong thread. This parachute cord is rated to hold 550 lbs before breaking, hence the name “550 cord”. Uses of this cord are limited only by the user’s imagination, from shelter construction to first aid. ERI's Metal Match Rod Fire Starter...better than matches. A reliable fire starter is an outdoor must.















ERI's own "metal match" The metal is an Austrian Auermetal Rod, 1/4" inch in diameter and 2/1/2 inches in length. It has a wooden (Paduc) handle, synthetic lanyad,and an oil tempered steel "striker."


Striking the tethered steel blade against the metal rod (a combination of several materials) allows a user to make a spark hot enough to ignite many different types of tinders..."down" from several plants, pitch, shaved wood, cotton balls, etc. In fact, ERI recommends saturating cotton balls with petroleum jelly (i.e.
 Vaseline) as a reliable fire starting tinder. If you prepare your materials properly, you can start over 500 fires with one Metal Match.
Pictures (Top, L to R): Metal Match with handle, leather lanyard, and steel "striker" similar to a hacksaw blade. As the photos demonstrate, put pressure on steel blade and strike it along Metal Match to achieve a healthy spark. A little practice helps.

  2. Platform & brace, cotton ball saturated with Vaseline, and aiming the Metal Match to ignite the cotton ball. Since it is the small threads of cotton that initially catch fire from a spark, pull your cotton ball apart and spread it out before lighting.
  3. Metal Match spark igniting cotton ball. Note brace (larger piece of wood) to left of cotton ball helps prevent your kindling from suffocating the burning cotton ball.

Waterproof Orange Match Container...ideally one for matches and a second for petroleum saturated cotton balls.
Tough, brightly colored match container to keep your best matches dry, even during the foulest weather. Small metal match on bottom of the container can be used as a backup for your other metal match. We suggest purchasing two, one for REI Stormproof matches (recommeded) and secon
d for petroleum jelly (i.e. Vaseline)  saturated cotton balls. The matchbox will hold 5 to 6 large cotton balls saturated with petroleum jelly...one of the most reliable fire starting methods ever discovered. Glass Signal Mirror (2"X3")...USAF Military Survival Style Mirror. A well designed, 2"X3" glass signal mirror is an extremely effective "medium range" signaling device, capable of reflecting the sun's brightest rays from 25 to 50+ miles.

Our high quality glass signal mirror can reflect the sun's light over 50 miles under really bright conditions. One of the least

Pre-Mac Travel Well "SWP" (Survival Water Purifier)...Pocket Travel Well SWP is designed to meet the specific requirements for treatment of water in emergency or survival conditions.





















Using the proven filtration and sterilization system of Pre-Mac's highly successful PWP (Pocket Travel Purifier), the SWP will provide safe drinking water from contaminated sources. Size and weight have been kept to a minimum for inclusion in emergency ration packs. Not for use with salt water.
