ERI Sales Philosophy:
For years ERI has been writing and selling publications relevant to SAR and survival. Then several years ago we began offering the extremely effective Pre-Mac water purifiers for sale. OutdoorSafe Survival Kit...the kit that contains the basics-shelter, fire & signaling
Renowned survival instructor and outdoorsman, Peter Kummerfeldt, designed the OutdoorSafe Survival Kit. ERI has long promoted the need to carry the basic components included in this kit with you at all times. The most important survival categories are covered: shelter, fire and signaling. A large plastic bag serves as an emergency shelter. A metal match and waterproof matchbox container make up the fire section. . A highly visible glass signal mirrorand a loud plastic whistle make up the signaling section. Also included are survival and medical instructions. 8' X 10' Silicon Impregnated Nylon Tarp...light, strong and the best for shelter construction.
ERI Ultralite 8'W X 10'L tarps is constructed from waterproof 1.1 oz silicone impregnated ripstop nylon. extremel durable and compact. Key seams are double stitched for strength. 10 reinforced black oxidized black grommets, one in each corner with the remaining six spread evenly around perimeter. Three 12" cotton twill ties attached to the center seam provide multiple configuration options. Packaged in reusable mesh bag with micro cord drawstring and cord lock. Emergency Shelter Bag...heavy duty, highly visible orange bag offers incredible protection from inclement weather

Nothing is a higher priority than protection against cool, wet and windy weather causing excessive body heat loss resulting in hypothermia. A plastic bag will never replace a sleeping bag and tent, but it can provide adequate emergency shelter when forced to wait out a storm or spend an unexpected night away from civilization. Make at least one, preferably two, sheltering bags part of your "pocket" gear whenever venturing away from the beaten path. Also works well for the "underclothed" at camp, on the water or even at outside sporting events.

Paracord (Parachute 550 Cord) 50 ft...White, strong, outer sheath with 7 strands of "inner" core with a strength of 35# each. One of the most versatile lines ever designed.

Don't confuse this 550 Parachute Cord with the numerous copies on the market today. This is the official product used by the U.S. Military. It's military designation is MIL-C-5040 Type III and has a rated strength of 550 lbs. Our version, the authentic version, comes in white. The sturdy flexible “rope” is actually used in the construction of parachutes. The genuine “550 cord” has a flexible outer cover, which contains 7 nylon cords which when removed can be used for sewing or any other purpose that requires a strong thread. Our parachute cord is rated to hold 550 lbs before breaking, hence the name “550 cord”. The uses of this cord are limited only by the user’s imagination, from shelter construction to first aid. This is a must have for any survival kit. Our Military Specification 550 Parachute Cord comes in 50 foot lengths.

Metal Match...an outdoor must...a reliable fire starter
Striking the teathered steel blade against the metal stick (a combination of several materials) allows a user to make a spark hot enough to ignite many different types of tinders..."down" from several plants, pitch, shaved wood, cotton balls, etc. In fact, ERI recommends saturating cotton balls with Vaseline as a reliable fire starting tinder. If you prepare your materials properly, you can start over 500 fires from our Metal Match.

  1. Metal Match with handle, leather lanyard, and steel "striker" similar to a hacksaw blade. As the photos demonstrate, put pressure on steel blade and strike it along Metal Match to achieve a healthy spark. A little practice helps.
  2. Hunting knife and mallet technique for splitting firewood into small pieces before lighting fire. Finding or preparing enough small firewood is an often overlooked step. Make sure your initial flame has the kindling and fuel necessary to grow into a respectable fire.
  3. Platform & brace, cotton ball saturated with Vaseline, and aiming the Metal Match to ignite the cotton ball. Since it is the small threads of cotton that initially catch fire from a spark, pull your cotton ball apart and spread it out before lighting.
  4. Metal Match spark igniting cotton ball. Note brace (larger piece of wood) to left of cotton ball helps prevent your kindling from suffocating the burning cotton ball.
  5. Result of your efforts. Remember, "practice makes perfect", even in rainy and windy weather.

Waterproof Match Container

Tough, brightly colored match container to keep your best matches dry, even during the foulest weather. Small metal match on bottom of the container can be used as a backup for your other metal match. We suggest purchasing two, one for REI matches (recommeded) and second for Vaseline saturated cotton balls. The matchbox will hold 5 to 6 large cotton balls saturated with Vaseline...one of the most reliable fire starting methods ever discovered. Duct tape both together for a solid and reliable firestarting system.

Signal Mirror (USAF Military Survival Style - Glass)...A well designed, 2"X3" glass signal mirror is an extremely effective "medium range" signaling device, capable of reflecting the sun's brightest rays from 25 to 50+ miles.

Our high quality glass signal mirror can reflect the sun's light over 50 miles under really bright conditions. One of the least expensive and most reliable signaling methods available to the aviator, sailor, and outdoor enthusiast. It is easy to learn how to use the "second sun" in the center of the mirror as a sighting device. It also comes with a hole in the corner so you can attach a lanyard for wearing around your neck. We suggest carrying it in the provided foam case to help protect it from breaking. Directions are also written on the mirror.

The ERI mirror has a "sighting device" (second sun) that allows you to drop your hand while still knowing where the signal is reflecting. The picture on the right illustrates how to use any mirror as a signal mirror. Remember to keep the mirror (compact, credit card, rearview, or whatever you have) snug against your cheek while reflecting the sun's rays through your fingers onto your target. If you move the mirror away from your face, you will lose your aim.

Pre-Mac Pocket Travel Well (SWP - Survival Water Purifier) Personal Water Purifier
Pocket Travel Well SWP is designed to meet specific requirement for treatment of water in emergency or survival conditions. Using the proven filtration and sterilization system of Pre-Mac's highly successful PWP, Pocket Travel Well will provide safe drinking from contaminated sources. Size and weight have been kept to a minimum for inclusion in emergency ration packs. Not for use with salt water.

The SWP is convenient to use and will not block due to its high filtration capability and in-built pump. The rated capacity of Pocket Travel Well is 50 liters, at which point it should be discarded.
